The Eleven Gentlemen of Charleston

A study on the founding of the Mother Council of the World

The Eleven Gentlemen of Charleston offers a better understanding of the origins, structure, and lasting legacy of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. By examining the eleven founders, students learn how diverse backgrounds in military service, religion, medicine, scholarship, commerce, and international diplomacy helped establish the Mother Supreme Council of the World in Charleston in 1801.

The course encourages an understanding of the historical significance, institutional legitimacy, and philosophical foundations of the Scottish Rite by looking at the founders’ biographies, to see how their shared character, leadership, and unity formed a strong Masonic institution whose influence now reaches around the world.
